AGGREGATE CALCULATOR

How much will you need?

HOW?

AGGREGATE CALCULATOR

Let us help you work it out

Use our step-by-step guide to work out how much gravel, shingle or other aggregate you will need for your project.

01

Measure your area

For rectangular or square areas:
Measure the length and the width of the space. Multiply these two numbers together to get the total square meterage (e.g., 4m x 12m = 48 square meters).

For irregular or curved areas:
Break the area down into several smaller, regularly shaped sections. Calculate the area for each section and then sum them u
02

Determine the depth

Consider the project:

The recommended depth of gravel for a driveway is 50-60mm. Be careful not to lay your gravel too thick as this will cause ‘rutting’ when driven over. Too little and you may expose the sub base beneath.

If laying gravel in a pathway, you can opt for a depth of around 40mm, this will ensure a good coverage whilst maintaining a suitable depth.

We recommend laying the gravel at 40mm depth for beds.

Convert to meters:
Make sure your desired depth is in meters to match your other measurements (e.g., 50mm = 0.05m

03

Calculate the Volume

Use the formula:

Multiply your total square meterage by the chosen depth.

Example: If your area is 48 square meters and you want a 0.05m depth, your volume is 48m² x 0.05m = 2.4 cubic meters

Approx tonnes per cubic meter

Here's a rough guide to how many tonnes (bags) you might need per cubic meter depending on which product you need:

Sharp sand - 1.6

Ballast - 1.8

Shingle - 1.4

Building sand - 1.5

Path gravel - 2.0

Type 1 aggregate - 1.8

Soil - 1.4
